Fake Stop-Motion With One Slider

Time · Posterize Time

Posterize Time turns smooth motion into choppy, stop-motion-like frames — hold each frame for longer instead of playing every frame. Slide a value from 1 (every frame) to 10+ (every 10th frame), and your footage instantly gets that hand-animated feel. It's a timeless effect used in music videos, title sequences, and comedic moments.

Settings used

  • Frame Rate: 6

Add the effect from FX → Time → Posterize Time. Frame Rate controls how many frames per second to display — 1 is nearly static, 6 is obvious stop-motion, 12+ is subtle choppiness. Lower values create more dramatic stuttering. Use it on the entire clip or animate it over time to create moments where motion suddenly stutters, then smooths back out.

When to use it

Use Posterize Time on action sequences for comedic stuttering, or on dance footage for a stylized, mechanical look. Apply it to match other stop-motion elements in your edit. Animate frame hold from 1 to 5 for a gradually stuttering effect. It's especially effective on music videos where the choppiness matches a glitchy beat. Works on any layer — video, text, shapes.
