Recreate the Classic Old-Cartoon Iris Transition
Iris Wipe creates that classic circular camera iris close — the effect old cartoons used where a circle shrinks from the edges, closing in on one element. It's instantly recognizable, nostalgic, and perfect for comedic moments or when you want that vintage feel. Also works in reverse for opens, or as a focus effect on any moment.
Settings used
- Transition Completion: Keyframed 0 to 100
- Feather: 0
- Shape: Circle
Add the effect from FX → Transition → Iris Wipe. Shape controls the iris geometry — Circle is the classic iris effect, Square is a variant. Feather softens the iris edge — 0 is a hard edge, 20+ is blended. The completion parameter animates from 0 to 100 automatically during export, or you can keyframe it manually for custom timing. Animate from open (0) to closed (100) for the closing effect, reverse for an open.
When to use it
Use Iris Wipe for comedic moments, vintage transitions, or to draw attention to a specific area of the frame. It's especially effective at the end of scenes when you want a dramatic close. Position the iris center on a subject's face for a focus effect. Use it sparingly — it's a signature effect that gets cliché if overused. Perfect for kid-friendly or retro content.
