Make Custom-Shaped Transitions With Gradient Wipe
Gradient Wipe uses an image (a gradient, shape, or texture) to control exactly how the transition happens. Instead of a straight line or preset pattern, you supply your own wipe shape — stars, spirals, logos, anything. The dark areas reveal the previous shot, white areas show the next shot, making infinite custom transitions possible.
Settings used
- Gradient Type: Linear
- Softness: 15px
- Invert: Off
Add the effect from FX → Transition → Gradient Wipe. Gradient Type is the shape controlling the wipe — Linear, Radial, Spiral, or Diamond. Softness feathers the edge where the transition happens — 0 is crisp, 20-30 is smooth. Invert flips which shot appears first. Choose a gradient that matches your content's aesthetic.
When to use it
Use Gradient Wipe to create branded transitions (logo-shaped wipes), stylized reveals, or when you want a wipe that matches your edit's energy. Radial wipes work for focus-on-subject moments. Spiral wipes feel dynamic and fast. Create your own gradient images for completely custom transitions — this is where Gradient Wipe shines over standard effects.
